FCC Set-Top Box News
By RSCRYPTO

WASHINGTON, September 29, 2016  The set-Top Box Order has been removed from the September Open Meeting Agenda, The proposal will go on the Commissions circulation list and remain under consideration by Commissioners.

On Jan. 27, 2016, FCC chairman Tom Wheeler proposed a one-stop shopping approach to "choice and competition" in the set-top market that would unite all online and traditional video through a single box. He billed the plan as an attempt to "tear down anti-competitive barriers and pave the way for software, devices and other innovative solutions to compete with the set-top boxes that a majority of consumers must lease today."

His proposal set off a chain of reactions from industry and policymakers. Pay TV providers and programmers joined to form the Future of TV Coalition to battle what many view as an AllVid-like proposal, while others subscribe to Wheeler's stance that the plan is about opening set-top box standards rather than relying on proprietary ones.
